Dr. Lampson is the author of Therapy for Relationships with Eating Disorders that will be published in the fall of 2024 by Norton.
In this book, Dr. Lampson introduces a new therapy, Gottman-RED, for couples in which one person has an eating disorder history (past or present) or who struggles with weight, food, compulsive exercise, or body image issues. Couples begin by learning traditional Gottman Method Couples Therapy interventions and then add 14 new interventions designed particularly for these couples that address topics such as support after using a behavior, healthy connection, vulnerable conversations, challenges facing the non-eating disorder partner, and sexual intimacy.
Here is a video of Dr. Lampson explaining her understanding of how an eating disorder develops and why recovery is so complex and challenging.
The goal of the Gottman-RED therapy is not behavior change, but strengthening the relationship so that behavior change can be possible. Most couples avoid talking about these sensitive topics related to food and weight issues. Many couples have struggled in silence for years. If you can relate to this, I strongly encourage you to try this therapy. Please reach out to me for more information.
